Video/Interview
Kawai Kanaka‘ole-Ioane & Benny Anthony

Introduction

The project that I have been working on all year is interviewing people for their information on what they know about the changes that has happened along the Keaukaha coastline. My main part of the project is to find the interviewees and to do the interviews and my partner, Benny Anthony, is in charge of the videotaping and editing. After we finished with all the interviews, Benny edits it onto the computer to do some touch-ups and then he made a video out of it. This video will be used for our finished product and will be presented for our presentation. In this video, we also have some footage of our fellow classmates working on their science project.

My project is important because it will give people a little bit of knowledge about the changes that has happened along the Keaukaha coastline. It is also important because knowing about the changes of your home will make it easier to understand things in different ways.

Process

When this project was assigned we went through many different ideas and finally came up with the idea to interview people along the coastline to see what they know about the changes that have happened to the Keaukaha coastline. Then we decided to videotape all the interviews, and when it was all finished, Benny would edit it onto the computer to do some touch-ups and make a video out of it to present as our final piece. The questions that we have asked to the interviewees were:

•  What do you know about the changes that have happened to the Keaukaha coastline?

•  What is one of the major changes?

•  Where do you mostly see pollution on the Keaukaha coastline?

•  How is the pollution affecting the beaches?

•  How do you feel about the changes that have happened to the Keaukaha coastline?

Difficulties

We took a lot more time than we needed for this project to actually do it. At the beginning of the year, we didn't really put a lot of effort into finding people to interview and when it came almost to the due dates, we worked very hard and good. It took us a while to find people to interview. We went through a lot of different questions for our interviewees. We went from having 15 questions, to having 10 questions and now we have five questions.

During this project, there were many problems that we encountered. One of the many was coming up with the questions, finding people to interview, setting due dates and getting people to take us around to start on our interviewing. During a lot of our interviews, we encountered problems as we watched it on the video. We saw that some of the interviews, the volume didn't come out good, and some of the footage wasn't good enough to put onto our video. At the beginning of the year, we had two interviews' that was done, but because of a screw up, the tape was thrown away so we had to do it again. Finding people to interview was one of our major problems because there weren't many people that we knew to interview, but after awhile there were many people, and we finally got enough for our project and thanks to them our project has improved a lot since the beginning of the year.

Interviews

During this project, there were some moments that we have enjoyed doing. Watching the finished video gave us some laughter and made us thing about the things that we went through throughout the year. Some of the things were the interviews that we don't have with us now because of an accident that occurred. Through the interviews, we have learned about how the people in Keaukaha feel about the pollution that is happening on their home. A lot of the interviewees taught us more about the dangers that we should be looking out for on the coastline, such as, pollution, drugs and many more. For this project, we have enjoyed many things and learned a lot from the interviews that were done.

So far we did three interviews. The three interviews were Aunty Lilinoe Young, Chewy Anthony and uncle John and aunty Noe Ioane. Watching all of these interviews put a little bit of knowledge about the changes into our minds. Aunty Lilinoe explains to us about the times when she was young and what they used to do along the coastline. Many of the things she explained to uss had related to today. Our second interview was with a friend who's name is Chewy Anthony.

Chewy explains to us how thoughts about the pollution and the changes that have happened to the coastline. Chewy also explains to us how he felt about the different things that are now happening to the coastline and what the coastline is now used for. He says that he doesn't like the fact that there is now a sewage company in Keaukaha because the pollution is really getting bad on the coastline.

The interview that was most recently done was with aunty Noe and uncle John Ioane. Uncle John explains to us about the little changes of the Keaukaha coastline and his feelings about the pollution nowadays. He says many things about the ships coming in and bringing more rubbish and the fact that it increases more of the pollution on the Keaukaha coastline and made us think more about doing something big to protect it from the bad things that are happening nowadays.

Conclusion

This project that we have been working on all year taught us a lot about the Keaukaha coastline. We learned about the different changes that have happened and the feelings that some of the people felt while it was happening. Learning about the coastline put some interest in me about how and what the coastline was used for in the old Hawaiian days. We learned about the beaches and how it all used to be clean and how it is today because of the cruise ships and the tourists. The interviews and the researching are the two main things that helped a lot for the project. It taught us a lot more than we knew about the coastline.

Going through this experience of the coastline made us think about the things that we would have done different. If I had to do this again I would have done many things different. Finding more people with information on the coastline would be one of the plans changed to different kinds until it got to how it is now. If I had to do this again, I would keep to my first plan so that nothing would be confusing. One of the other things that I would have done different is concentrating on one specific subject for the project. I really enjoyed doing this project because it put a lot of information in me that I didn't know about, it taught me more about Keaukaha that I didn't know existed, and it put pictures in my head of imagining the changes that has happened to Keaukaha. Now our project is almost over and there are a lot of memories that will be reminisced.
