Scope & Sequence Phase
1 : Preparation Of Materials
Species Identification Photo Bank
The teacher will need to create a photo bank of the organisms
that will be observed by students in the area(s) that they will
survey. You may need to do a preliminary snorkel to see what organisms
are found in the area(s) your students will survey as they may
differ from site to site.
Quadrat Construction
Determine the number of quadrats you will use, the ideal would
be 1 quadrat for every two students. Depending on the age of students,
teachers may decide to construct the quadrats themselves or have
students construct them. If at all possible, have students construct
the quadrats themselves under adult supervision. This is a great
practice in problem solving as a group.
Student Construction : Show the
entire class what the end product should look like by drawing a
picture of a quadrat on the board. Seeing an actual finished quadrat
may give students hints in how to put their own quadrat together.
Break the students into small groups. Distribute quadrat construction
materials to each group giving them a time period in which to construct
the quadrat.

Data Sheets
You will need to decide what survey technique(s) you will use
and determine what organisms will be found at each survey site
before creating data sheets. You will need to create separate sheets
for each type of data that will be collected. Use the data sheets
available on our website to help you create your own data sheets.
