Developing Science Skills]
Preparing for Your Science Fair Project
Objectives:
- to use the Kumulipo as a basis for science fair projects
- to create science fair project based on a topic
- to ask questions about the topic that can be researched
- to choose a topic of interest and value to students
Procedure:
- Gather a variety of materials, books, and magazines
- Materials gathered could be specific to the
Kumulipo Science Fair Themes.
- Group students and have them skim and scan through the materials
listing as many interesting topics as they can find.
- Have students develop at least 3 questions
they would like to study and research. A topic may come from materials
they just scanned, a hobby or interest, or something studied in
Science class.
- When a topic is chosen, distribute HK#1.
Students need to narrow the focus of their topic. Teachers may
choose to have students web out their ideas on a separate sheet
before proceeding with HK#1.
- Help students as needed to work through HK#1.
- As students complete HK#1,
they will be ready to begin gathering information on their projects.
It is important that they keep a science learning log or journal.
Not only does it provide the teacher with a means of monitoring
student progress, but it can also serve as a learning tool for
the student. Be sure that students record the date, what
was done, the information gained, questions
that may need to be researched, ideas, and opinions
related to the topic. Time should be allotted at the end of each
session for students to record journal entries. Logs may be collected
and reviewed by teachers weekly and then discussed as needed.
Journals may also provide information as to whether or not mini-guide
lessons are needed prior to each project session.
