Aia i Mokaulele he pua nani,

Aia i Mokaulele
he Pua Nani
From the Ke Au ‘Oko‘a newspaper,
July 25, 1867
There is a beautiful flower at Mokaulele
The heavenly mist dampens it,
There isn’t the same thing under the shade of the ‘ākōlea,
That is better than Leilanohenohea
There is no fragrance to the Magnolia
flower,
There is no waft of fragrance from the Lily,
The Manuea is the only one with a permeating fragrance,
However Leilanohenohea does not have it.
Lili‘u has a wonderful red glow
about her,
Because she always sits in the dark shades,
However, an unusual call is being called,
Leilanohenohea will not have it.
Pihanakalani is indeed beautiful,
Perfumed by the wafting breeze of the kupukupu,
The Papuhea winds are saying,
Leilanohenoea will not have it.
I traveled over the dark hills,
I read about the Paliuli woman,
I saw, I heard the voice of the Kiowea,
However Leilanohenohea did not get it. |

More Information
Hawaiian Name: Limu Manauea, Manauea
Japanese Name: Ogo, Ogo Nori
Scientific Name: Gracilaria spp.
Description: This limu grows between 4-6 inches
tall. Sometimes it is pink and green. There are lots of branches
at the top of this limu. Because this limu is so delicious, most
of this limu in Hawai‘i are over harvested. Nowadays there is hardly
any limu growing in these places.
Interesting Fact: There have been revitalization efforts in Hawai‘i,
however once it is planted, it is immediately harvested by those
who are hungry for limu manauea and it doesn’t grow anymore. |
